Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has issued a voluntary recall of select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to the possibility of elevated levels of vitamin D. Although vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, the ingestion of high levels can lead to health issues depending on the amount consumed and the duration of exposure. Potential symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include vomiting, excessive drooling, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and renal (kidney) dysfunction.
The recall comes after Purina received two reports of confirmed cases of dogs displaying symptoms of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the affected dog food. However, each of the dogs recovered after discontinuing the diet.
The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers that can verify a prescription. Pet owners who purchased bags of the affected product are asked to immediately stop feeding it to their pets and dispose of it in a container inaccessible to other animals, including wildlife. If a pet has exhibited any signs of weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, or increased thirst or urination while consuming the recalled dog food, pet owners should contact their veterinarian.
The recall only applies to the PPVD EL prescription dry dog food and does not affect any other Purina pet care products. Purina has requested that veterinary and other retail partners remove and destroy the affected product from their inventory.
Purina has expressed apologies for any concerns or inconvenience the recall may have caused for pet owners and veterinarians, emphasizing that the health and well-being of pets is their top priority. Pet owners who have questions or require assistance with obtaining a refund can contact Purina’s customer service team at 1-800-345-5678 or via email at https://www.purina.com/contact-usExternal
